Fully Restrained, Fused Joints
PolyPipe® HDPE pipe is joined by the butt fusion method conforming to ASTM D2657 and PolyPipe® recommendations. This process provides for a precision heat weld as strong as the pipe wall. A properly fused pipe eliminates root penetration, infiltration and exfiltration of the joint. The fusion bond also creates a fully restrained joint. The strength of the joint enhances the flexibility and resiliency of the whole line, permitting bending and flexing.

The pipe is laid and ready for drawing back through the drilled hole. The hole is in the distance next to where the men are standing.
This is the drilling head projecting from the drilled hole.
The drilling head is being removed for installation of the reamer used to enlarge the hole for pipe installation.
This shows the angled spade on the drill head which is the means for steering the drill rod. The "clock" of the head is controlled by the operator based on feed back from the locator.
The particular pipe being drawn bac through is 8"D. The reamer provides a hole large enough for the pipe.
Estimeate time to draw the 520 feet of pipe is 3 hours.
Since the pipe is plastic a wire is strung through the drilled hole along with the pipe to provide as a target for a locator device in the future.

The "locator" monitors the progress of the head of the drill rod or "stem". He keeps the drill on line and at proper depth by advising the "operator" what angle or "clocking" to target the drill-head. Target depth here is to be below 5 feet. At the time of this picture the drill head was at 5 feet 6 inches deep. The engineer is monitoring progress.
The drilling unit in use. The rods or stems are driven into the earth using drilling "mud" as a cooling and lubrication medium. The mud is the pool of tan colored material around the drill stem.
